The government today announced major initiatives and changes in the policy framework aimed at boosting export of apparel and mitigating the effects of a rising Rupee. The Union Minister for Commerce Mr Kamal Nath was speaking at an international conference on India's competitiveness in the textiles and apparel industry and referred to the rising Rupee as a double edged sword, one that is helping India grow and attract higher foreign investments and at the same time posing a threat to Indian exports.
Mr Kamal Nath however felt confident that Indian industry will measure up to this challenge and find ways to boost revenues and cut costs to counter the effects that the rising Rupee has had on their margins and competitiveness.

Big opportunities in children’s apparel industry |
According to statistics, in China, under 16-child population is around 380 million, accounting for one forth of total Chinese populace. Thus, consumption for children clothing is increasing by 8 percent each year. But, the yearly output of the same is just over 600 million pieces, which is far from enough. It is observed that in cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Changed and Xian the average spending on Chinese children clothing is more than 1000 Yuan each month. This data shows that kids apparel market in China has a huge business opportunity and more and more domestic and overseas enterprises have now started to invest in this industry. This in turn, has increased the number of children clothing brands in the market. Big international brands like Adidas and Nike introduced their children clothing in China. |
FM inaugurates Garment Training Unit II in Karaikudi |
Shri. P. Chidambaram, Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance inaugurated the Garment Training Unit II & Distributed the Placement Orders to the first batch of Rural BPL trainees in the Apparel Industry, the 24th November 2007 at the Alagappa University, Karaikudi. A few Knitwear units in Tirupur have also offered placement to the trainees. In the said function, Shri. A. Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters’ Association and Chairman of APPTEX Manpower Development Services Limited and Shri. RCM Reddy, IAS, MD & CEO of IL&FS-CDI, New Delhi gave felicitations. In the function, Shri. A. Sakthivel submitted a Memorandum to the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister for considering the measures to mitigate the problems arisen due to appreciation of rupee against dollar. |
